Making your home look nicer doesn’t have to involve spending hundreds of dollars or hiring a contractor. In fact, there are dozens of small, simple things that you can do yourself to upgrade the look and feel of your home. Below are five of our favorite home DIY projects. All of them are easy enough for even the most mechanically inept to pull off. And, best of all, they each take less than one day to complete.
1. Spruce Up Your Front Door
The front door is one of the first parts of your home that people see. So it goes without saying that it should look nice. Repainting, staining, or refinishing is a simple DIY home project that will pay off big time. It greatly improves the look of your home while also upping its curb appeal. Though the specific color (if you’re painting) is obviously up to you, it is generally a good bet to go with a color that is complimentary to the color of your house.
2. Paint an Accent Wall
Another DIY home project that involves painting is adding a new layer of color to one of the walls of your house. Painting a single wall in, say, your living room is a great way to give the space more life. Bright colors, such as yellow, can really make a room pop and feel brighter.
3. Wash Your Home’s Exterior
Few things make a home look more haggard than a dirty exterior. One of the best home DIY projects is to spend a day washing the outside of your house. A simple scrub down will help big time. You might even consider renting a pressure washer if you really want to do things right. A pressure washer also allows you to wash your roof (clean out your gutters while you’re up there!) if you have the ladder and other safety equipment to do so.
4. Build a Wooden Pallet Bike Rack
Wooden pallets can be found for extremely cheap, especially when they are already used. Get your hands on two and use them to make a wooden bike rack for your family. The best way to do this is to lay one of the pallets flat on the ground and rest the other upright on top of it (they should look much like the seat and back of a chair). Line up the slats so that they empty bits also line up. It is now easy to place your bikes wheel in the empty part (the second pallet keeps the bike from swaying side to side). Take this project up a notch by painting the pallets.
5. Do Some Basic Landscaping
Basic landscaping is another one day DIY home project that will really up your home’s curb appeal. Pulling weeds, mowing the grass, and cutting back shrubbery is a good start. Consider adding a couple of colorful plants and maybe some brick or stone edging around your garden beds. If you don’t have much of a yard, then think about buying a couple of colorful flowerpots to arrange next to your front door.
